Civilopedia entry[]
Roman poet Juvenal wrote, “the people who once upon a time handed out military command, high civil office, legions – everything, now restrains itself and anxiously hopes for just two things: bread and circuses.” In Juvenal’s estimation, the once-ambitious Romans of Augustus’s time had withered to a crowd that simply sought mindless entertainment. But public entertainment was not limited to the Roman Colosseum – the Mayan ball game and the Mississippian chunkey game were likewise sports arranged for spectacle (at times, debatably involving sacrifice and other religious features, at least in the Maya case).
Nonetheless, as Juvenal’s emperor surely knew, a bored empire is a dangerous one – as French philosopher Georges Bataille describes in the case of Mesoamerica, excess energy can just as easily spill into war as it can into games of sport and sacrifice. Entertainments such as public executions, gladiatorial contests, and the hunting of rare beasts may rankle present-day sensibilities, but they were common in many parts of the world in the course of history.
