Civilopedia entry[]

Mongolia has a long and complex history with religion. Early on, the Mongol Empire's religion was a form of shamanism (where an individual’s spirit communicates directly with the divine), holding the god Tengri at the height of an axis of power. Buddhism, especially Tibetan Buddhism, has impacted the region since its introduction only a few years after the life of the Buddha (about 500 BCE). But Buddhism's popularity fluctuated with shamanism, flourishing when Mongols were established in settled cities and declining when the Mongols were scattered across the steppe.

Erdene Zuu is the oldest surviving Buddhist temple in Mongolia, built in 1585 under an ambitious plan to model the temple after a Tibetan japamala (a rosary) and constructed of stones from the ancient capital of Qaraqorum. At times, shamanism is still practiced there, highlighting the often syncretic and blended practices of the region.

Trivia[]

  • The Erdene Zuu's wonder quote is a simplification of the second accompanying prayer included in the appendix of the Bardo Thödol, also known as the Tibetan Book of the Dead.
