Civilopedia entry[]

Civilizations have long been built upon the bones of what came before, and interest in past civilizations’ leavings has been a feature of human society – Ramses II’s son famously sought to study and renovate the step-pyramid of Djoser, a monument that was at his time already nearly a millennium and a half old. But the principles of modern archaeology first became applied in the 1800s. These focus not on recovering treasures or unearthing monuments, but on stratigraphy: the layer-by-layer excavation of a site that reveals far more detail than can be gleaned from artifacts themselves – how and when an object came to be in a place is often the most informative part of the excavation.

Colonialism fueled much of the interest in early archaeology, as empire facilitated the movement of scholars to colonized areas, and sciences such as anthropology (in its 19th century form) sought to understand the evolution and development of cultures. Figures here like Augustus Pitt Rivers, William Flinders Petrie (who studied the Great Pyramid of Egypt), and Heinrich Schliemann (who excavated the ruins of Troy) formed the core of the discipline, and later archaeologists refined this to focus on the day-to-day aspects of ancient societies as a means to understand everyday life, beyond the massing of pyramids and temples.
