Civilopedia entry[]

Factories denote a site of mass production, where a large amount of labor is performed by machines. These mainly refer to workplaces after the Industrial Revolution, where steam and electricity revolutionized production – though the factory has its roots in water-powered mills or even mills powered by humans or animals.

Factories boomed during the 1800s and onward, mass-producing manufactured goods and raw materials. A key component of the factory is that labor is replaceable (as opposed to the artisan). Like a machine part, a worker could be switched out when needed. Also like machine parts, factory workers were stored, often just offsite (i.e. in planned residential communities). The effects of this shift in labor were profound – new cities arose with new industrial sectors (and new polluted slums), while new theories developed to grapple with these alterations.

Factories placed large amounts of capital in a small number of hands. Machines were expensive, and workers did not own the machines they used. Theorists such as Friedrich Engels pointed out how this division created a large body of industrial workers with few assets other than their physical labor, drew people together in cities, and produced the conditions for the objectification of people's labor. Others, such as E.P. Thompson, pointed out how factory time became a standard measure: hours on and off work and homes entirely separate from the workplace arose from working on machine time. In this way, the factory system structured how we think of our world, our time, and our work.
