Artillery changed warfare. Early bombards ended the dominance of castles across the medieval landscape, but Napoleonic generals took artillery seriously as a centerpiece of strategy and brought it onto the battlefield proper. The field cannon epitomized this shift – it could be relocated from place to place, allowing for strategic bombardment of enemy positions even as the enemy moved. The resulting barrage meant line infantry could be destroyed even before they had the opportunity to form.
