Civilopedia entry[]
Aircraft were first deployed en masse in World War I, and could scout territory or drop bombs on enemy positions with relative ease. As bombers entered the fray so did the aircraft intended to stop them. Fighters were light, maneuverable planes designed for speed, and they were traditionally armed with lighter weapons intended to combat enemy aircraft – this meant machine guns, at least until rocketry. During World War II, the superstar fighter was the British Spitfire. Along with the less famous Hurricane, the Spitfire ended the German bombers' reign of terror on Britain. These fighters were also effective against the Japanese Zero, which was a remarkably light and maneuverable craft in its own right. Fighters remain in use today, though they have grown heavier and more complex – for example, the Soviet MiG-21 and American F-14. Thankfully those two craft never saw a great deal of action against each other.
