Civilopedia entry[]
Fishing has historically been a central part of human livelihoods. The Powhatans of North America built weirs of sticks driven into river mud to create blind mazes where fish could easily be caught. Throw-nets or gill-nets were also common around the world. Fish became a significant commodity as large seafaring ships hit the waters. Particularly rich fishing zones, such as the Grand Banks off the coast of Newfoundland, offered rich sources of cod and other fish that could be salted and transported back to Europe, or consumed by hungry sailors. In the Baltic, herring (pickled in a variety of ways) became a major product, traded by the Hanseatic League and its competitors. Indeed, the city of “merchants’ harbor,” the literal translation of Copenhagen, was built upon the herring industry.
Over time, fishing created problems. The introduction of seemingly profitable species into vulnerable ecosystems, such as the Nile perch in Lake Victoria, caused an ecological disaster, while the sheer scale of overfishing had taken its toll on ocean-going industries. Tuna, for all its popularity, is an endangered species. Plastics, hydropower in river systems, and climate change contribute to the crash of fisheries worldwide.
