Civilopedia entry[]

Positioned at the tip of the Indian subcontinent, the Chola Dynasty was at the heart of the seagoing Silk Road. It managed much of its naval exploits via a loose network of merchant houses and privateers, of which the Five Hundred Lords was of special note. Casting themselves as adventurer-merchants, the Five Hundred Lords specialized in risky adventures abroad (including Southeast Asia) as well as investment in infrastructure and maintenance at home (including ports and irrigation). Their goods included spices of all kinds, elephants, and horses, as well as gold and jewels. In addition, they cast themselves as those upholding a noble creed, the vira-banaju-dharma, the law of the hero-merchants.
