The long, supple and strong fibers from the flax or linseed plant have been used to make clothing since the Paleolithic. In antiquity, the crop was grown from the Mediterranean to India, and refined into a light, strong cloth – linen, and its seeds crushed to produce linseed oil. As such, it was one of the first crops to be intensively domesticated (in Mesopotamia), and it was the flax plant’s fibers that wrapped Egyptian mummies and its oil that anointed them. Roman soldiers mixed linseed oil into their food, and Charlemagne decreed that his subjects should consume it for their health. The linen trade was present in ancient Greece, and intensified in the early modern period, especially in western Europe. It remains a popular material today, especially in summer.
