Food (Civ2) Food is necessary to keep your citizens alive; each one consumes 2 units of food per turn. Excess food that is not consumed is stored, and when enough has been stored, a new citizen is born and the city grows. A city's food stockpiles are cleared when a city grows one citizen unless a Granary or the Pyramids are built. Cities only lose half of their stockpiles of food with Granaries (or the Pyramids) when a city grows.

Food is also is used to support Settlers and Engineers.

Food can also be transferred between different cities with trade routes.
