Civilopedia entry[]

The Secret History of the Mongols describes Genghis Khan’s four elite generals as “dogs of war”: “Chisels for snouts and awls for tongues, iron for hearts and whips for swords, drinking the dew and racing the wind – they go.”

Each of the great Khan’s generals – Jebe, Kublai, Jelme, and Subutai – was a master strategist and tactician. Subutai in particular rose above the rest. He lacked the skill with horses of his Mongol compatriots (he was from a Turkic tribe), but made up for that with a focus on tactics. He deployed siege engines to devastating effect and exploited the Mongols’ most effective weapon: fear. Spies sent in advance would spread stories about the Mongols’ ferocity in battle. When coupled with a blistering artillery barrage and a heavy cavalry rush out from a smokescreen, most battles were won before they even began. Subutai himself was responsible for the conquest of Eastern Europe, Russia, and Persian-speaking lands, and his tactics were studied and deployed by Russian generals well into the 20th century.
