Francis I was King of France from 1515 until 1547, during which time he helped form the Franco-Ottoman alliance with Suleiman I. The Holy Roman Emperor Charles V was Francis’s greatest nemesis and would be the target of several military campaigns. At the Battle of Pavia in 1525, Francis would be captured by Charles and held captive for over a year until turning over his two sons, Henry and Francis, in exchange for his freedom.
