Civilopedia entry[]
Napoleon’s elite troops formed the Garde Impériale, or Imperial Guard, which was under his direct command. The Imperial Guard was not a particular troop class, but represented the best of the infantry, cavalry, and artillery available to the French army; this included dragoons, grenadiers, and even mamluks from Napoleon’s Arabian possessions. In total, the Imperial Guard numbered somewhere between the low thousands to 100,000 men. The Old Guard, or “grognards” [grumblers], were Napoleon’s favorites, but the Garde Impériale ceased when Napoleon’s empire fell and their leader was sent into exile.
