Civilopedia entry[]

A garden can be many things: a collection of exotic plants, a place of serene relaxation, or a location to cultivate food. Indeed, it could be all of the above. The terraced gardens of Ashurbanipal, often considered the “Hanging Gardens of Babylon,” were irrigated structures built to model the lands he conquered. Ashurbanipal could "tour" his conquests by walking through these foreign landscapes. Groves of trees around Buddhist temples evoke the forest of Lumbini where the Buddha was allegedly born, and function as places of quiet contemplation. Persian gardens were masterpieces of irrigation, channeling small flows of water through cultivated, geometrically styled plots, which formed the inspiration for both Roman and Muslim gardens.
