Situated along the delta of the Vistula River, the Gdansk region has been settled for over 2000 years. The city of Gdansk (Danzig in German) was founded in 980 when Duke Mieszko I of Poland built a fortress here. Today Gdansk is the fourth largest city in Poland and that country's principal seaport.
