"The five oceans of Earth are: the Pacific, the Atlantic, the Titanic, the Arctic and the Indian."

- Ganesh Edmin, Lists of Prehistory

History[edit source]

Practical applications in mechanics, mathematics, physics, chemistry and geology intersect in colonial efforts to geoscape this planet. Although geoengineering has applications in mining, excavation, energy production and transportation systems, it is the realm of planetary engineering where it has been most utilized by colonists. Subsurface excavation and hydraulic fracturing can alter not only surface features but groundwater flow. Rock burst techniques can mitigate the effects of volcanism and seismic activity, and even raise or lower land levels if the geologic conditions are suitable. Subtle alterations of soil mechanics and chemistry can significantly improve sustainable use for agriculture, wildlife habitat and general population use. If these efforts accelerate, it is possible that the colonists can closely recreate Old Earth – at least insofar as the surface is concerned – if they so desire.
