Civilopedia entry[]
The word “ginko” simply means “bank,” and the Japanese banking sector became the powerhouse it is today during the Meiji restoration. Japan's oldest bank, the Dai-Ichi National Bank, was founded in 1873, and more were soon to come. Japanese banking, in tandem with the zaibastu, was instrumental in funding the wars of expansion under Meiji and subsequent regimes. Banking became a central feature of Japanese statecraft, despite postwar restructuring and internationalization.
