Civilopedia entry[]
How do we conceptualize events and connections when there are no more unmapped spaces? We may initially think that the world has only recently become globally interconnected in an era of digital linkages, but we have been linked for a long time. Take the sugar trade – European powers took a plant from Asia (originally from New Guinea, and transplanted elsewhere in antiquity), created plantations for it in the Caribbean, powered those plantations via enslaved people from Africa, and incorporated its refined product into their diets. One spoonful of sugar represents a network encompassing the entire inhabited world. Thinking globally means knowing about chains of production – and creating the economic and political apparatuses to manage them.
