Civilopedia entry[]

The origin of cereal agriculture was a key point in the development of urban life. Cereal grains such as wheat, maize, rice, and the like require a great deal of coordinated agricultural labor, intense at times and passive during others. Some scholars, like James Scott, cite the cultivation of grain as a key point for inequality, as a gateway for slavery and serfdom (though this is contested by others, such as David Graeber). When grain is harvested en masse, it needs to be stored to last until the seasons when there is no harvest. Furthermore, it needs to be protected against mice and other pests, and be kept high and dry so it does not spoil. Hence, the granary: a storehouse to keep grain safe and secure. Early granaries date back to the Neolithic, well before the scope of this game, and are found worldwide. Examples include wooden rice storage in Southeast Asia, stone structures amongst the Pueblo people of North America, ceramic structures in the Middle East, and simple pits in Egypt.
