A Great Work refers to a collectible that can be acquired and displayed within a Settlement in Civilization VII and its expansions. Each Great Work provides bonus yields to the assigned
Settlement, similar to those in Civilization VI. However, beyond their cultural value, Great Works also play a crucial role in progressing through certain Legacy Paths.
Mechanics[]
There are three types of Great Works:
Each type is exclusive to its respective Age, meaning that once the game progresses to a new era, previous Great Works can no longer be acquired. This system ensures that only one type of Great Work remains relevant at any given time.
Each type of Great Work provides unique bonus yields when displayed in a Settlement. However, Great Works require specific
Buildings or
Wonders with available slots to be displayed. While
Cities are the primary locations for displaying Great Works,
Towns may also sometimes purchase
Buildings that accommodate them, making them viable display locations as well.
How to Acquire Great Works[]
There are multiple ways to obtain Great Works:
- Advancing through the
Technology or
Civic trees
- Completing age-specific objectives
- Triggering
Narrative Events
- Recruiting Great People (only for certain civilizations)
- Becoming the Suzerain of certain City-States
- Constructing specific
Wonders
- Stealing from rival civilizations by conquering
Settlements that house Great Works.
Managing Great Works[]

Great Work Screen
When a Great Work is acquired, it is automatically assigned to a Settlement and placed in an available Great Work slot. If no slots are available, the Great Work is sent to the Archive, where it provides no yields and does not contribute to Legacy Path progress. When a slot becomes available later on, players must manually slot archived Great Works into open slots to activate their benefits.
Once a Great Work is slotted into a Settlement, it accumulates its respective bonus yields. While Great Works can be moved between
Settlements with open slots, they can never be returned to the Archive once assigned.
Although most Great Works provide Culture and
Science (which are global yields) and no theming bonus like in previous games, strategic placement can still be beneficial. Some
Settlements apply percentage-based bonuses to specific yields, making it optimal to display certain Great Works there for maximum efficiency.
Legacy Paths[]
Acquiring and displaying Great Works is essential for progressing through their respective Legacy Paths. Displaying a certain number of Great Works grants access to a Legacy and Golden Age bonus, enhancing the civilization's strength in the next era.
Since only displayed Great Works count toward Legacy Path progress (not those stored in the Archive), players may choose to delay displaying them to allow completion of other Legacy Paths. Once the legacy bonus is unlocked, additional Great Works from that era can still contribute bonus yields in the next Age, making them valuable even beyond their initial purpose.
Codex[]
Codices represent the scholarly research and philosophical writings of great scientists in the Antiquity Age. These works capture groundbreaking discoveries and intellectual advancements that shaped early civilizations. Collecting codices is the main goal to progress in the Great Library Legacy path.
- Bonus Yield: +2
Science when displayed
- Legacy Path Requirement: Display 10 Codices to complete the Scientific Legacy Path
- Legacy Bonus: +1
Science for each displayed Codex in the next Age
- Golden Age Bonus: Academies become Golden Age Academies, retaining all their yields and adjacency bonuses.
Compiling Codices[]
To acquire codices, players must advance through the Technology tree. Most codices are earned by mastering specific
Technologies, making scientific progress the primary means of obtaining them. As a result, investing heavily in
Science is essential to amass a large collection, reflecting the intellectual achievements and accumulated knowledge of your civilization.

Safeguarding Relics[]
To acquire relics, players must first found a religion and invest in Missionaries to spread their faith. Upon founding a religion, they will need to choose a belief that grants access to a reliquary. The type of reliquary selected determines which kinds of Settlements must be converted in order to obtain relics. Some reliquaries yield a single relic per conversion, while others provide two relics instead, offering a more efficient way to amass them. This system encourages strategic religious expansion, as players must carefully decide which
Settlements to target in order to maximize their relic collection.

Unearthing Artifacts[]
Artifacts can be buried anywhere beneath the surface, waiting to be unearthed by skilled Explorers. To locate them, players must recruit Explorers who will study Museums across different continents. Initially, Explorers will uncover the locations of Exploration Age artifacts. As players progress further in the Civic tree, they will gain the ability to revisit Museums and conduct deeper research, revealing the hidden sites of Antiquity Age artifacts. This system creates a competitive dynamic where civilizations must strategically deploy their Explorers to secure these valuable relics before their rivals, ensuring their place as the foremost preservers of history.
