The Great Writer is a type of Great Person Great Person in Civilization VI dedicated to the creation of Great Works of Writing. Each Great Writer may be activated up to two times on a tile containing a free slot which accepts Great Works of Writing (such as a Theater Square district with an Amphitheater, a Palace, or suitable wonder), creating up to two Great Works of Writing.
Earning Great Writers
Great Writers may be claimed by any player who has earned enough Great Writer points (except for those who play the Māori, for whom Great Writers are generally unavailable). Theater Squares generate +1 Great Writer point per turn, and provide an additional point for the first two buildings completed in that district. (For example, a Theater Square with an Amphitheater, Archaeological Museum would generate +3 Great Writer points per turn.) Further points may also be earned by completing the Theater Square Performances project in a city with a Theater Square. Players who do not have enough points may patronize a Writer by paying the difference using Faith or Gold.
The Bolshoi Theatre provides +2 Great Writer points each turn, and the Broadway wonder provides +3 Great Writer points every turn. In Civilization VI: Rise and Fall, the Great Library also provides +1 Great Writer point per turn.
Players can also increase their Great Writer point yields by using the Literary Tradition policy card, which generates +2 Great Writer points per turn.
The Divine Spark pantheon bonus and the Stockholm Suzerain bonus both increase the number of Great Writer points generated from each Theater Square by +1. (Note that in Rise and Fall, Stockholm's bonus is only active if the Theater Square has a completed Amphitheater building.)
Great Writers
Also note that the Great Work of Writing The Art of War is created by Great General Sun Tzu, using his special ability.

Strategy
Great Writers will be among your earliest and most reliable sources of Culture, as the Great Works they produce can start filling slots in Amphitheaters from the Classical Era onward. The only wonders with slots specifically for Great Works of Writing are the Bolshoi Theatre, Broadway, the Great Library, and Oxford University, so if you build these wonders, try to attract some Great Writers to fill their slots as well.
Civilopedia entry
Great writers are those men and women who express our desires, insights, fancies, foibles, fears, and joys in the written word. History has been marked by their voices; indeed, “history” is one of their voices. Whether in poetry, in novels and stories, for the stage or screen, these are the artists who have defined their civilizations and cultures. Some write prose and poetry about imaginary worlds; others write tracts of philosophy, politics, religion, and science about how our world is or should be. And let’s not forget those who put down facts on paper. Whatever their muse, whatever their intent, their words echo through time, binding us all together ... or sometimes setting us all apart.
