Civilopedia entry[]
A grocer, or grocery store, is a shop that deals in bulk quantities of food. These were often centers of small towns, and the systems of credit extended by grocers were lifelines for farmers whose incomes trickled in throughout the year until the harvest boom. Grocers came about during a time when food preservation – drying or otherwise – was rapidly evolving, and they were a step up in complexity from a traditional market where one wanders from stall to stall purchasing needed provisions. For American audiences, a grocer might be more recognizable as a corner store, bodega, or ethnic market – the larger supermarkets and hypermarkets that stock nearly every household item are features of the 20th century.
