A ground unit, as its name implies, is a unit that fights on the ground. They are the most numerous kind of unit; some of them include the Catapult and the Tank.
Ground units can board any naval unit except the Submarine. They can defend against air units, but cannot attack them unless the air unit is defending a city.
The Militia and Ranger Militia are technically ground units, though they are classified as special units since they are unable to attack and impossible to train in cities.
