Civilopedia entry[]

Artisans have been influential in nearly every aspect of human history. They are skilled tradesmen specialized in producing and evaluating particular goods or services – from merchants to academics, silk weavers to silversmiths. This work often needs to be evaluated by experts, which requires an organization. Guilds were self-governed and often operated as a type of monopoly under charter from the monarch or, more often, the city. The latter anticipated later bourgeois revolutions in France and elsewhere, as artisans and cities alike rebelled against the divine right of kings.

The guild hall refers to the offices of a guild. While guild-like associations existed in ancient Rome and parts of Asia, especially concerning the merchant houses of Chola, they are best known in their late medieval and early modern Europe incarnations. Guild-like associations remain today, especially within academia.
