Civilopedia entry[]
Numbers can be misleading. The Qing's so-called Eight Banners (or “gusa”) were actually twenty-four: eight for each of the Manchu, Han, and Mongol cohorts. Scholars estimate that a single gusa comprised about 18,000 troops and their families, but exact numbers remain unknown as records were kept hidden, likely for security reasons.
The gusa were more than military entities and represented an entire segment of Qing society, maintaining their own social and administrative customs. Membership in the gusa was hereditary, and service to one of the Eight Banners dictated one's ethnicity – for instance, a large group of Han bannermen transferred to the Manchu ranks became Manchu.
Though modernization and westernization eventually rendered the gusa obsolete, for a time they were the might and pride of the Qing.
