Civilopedia entry[]
Hydrated calcium sulfate, called gypsum after the Greek word for “chalk,” forms as brine but turns into a translucent crystal after being subjected to pressure and heat under the Earth's surface for hundreds of millions of years. As such, it often exists alongside other remnants of the sea floor: salt deposits or limestone. Gypsum has been known since Egyptian times as a source of plaster. The association of hard-hydrated calcium sulfate with powdery calcium sulfate hemihydrate is what makes it so useful – by heating gypsum and releasing some of its water, one can form the powder into shapes. When more water is added, it hardens again. While plaster isn’t terribly strong, it is useful as a building material. Due to gypsum's sulfur content, it also has uses in agriculture, as fertilizer.
