Civilopedia entry[]
Beginning in the 1760s, the city of Canton was the gateway for trade between China and the world. International trade was exclusive to its port, limiting visitors’ access to the empire proper. The “Canton System” permitted only one group of merchants to conduct trade on behalf of the Qing: the Hangshang. These independent merchants, also known as the Cohong, only dealt with other independent trading companies representing Western interests. In this way, the Chinese and European governments benefitted from the exchange of tea, porcelain, silk, and silver without direct contact. The Hangshang were often forced to offer bribes and gifts to the government agents who managed them. Even so, they benefitted immensely from their monopoly on international trade; despite the low status of merchants in the Confucian worldview, they quickly became some of the wealthiest people in China.
