Civilopedia entry[]

Dating at least as far back as 2500 BCE, harbors have been important components of the workings of empire. Within these sheltered bodies of water, ships used for trade and transport are able to moor and transfer goods safe from the winds and storms of the open sea. Though harbors are the bodies of water themselves, whether natural or manmade, the word is used synonymously with “dock” and “port,” coming to mean the general location and structures where ships dock and cargo is handled.

The earliest known harbor used for shipping is the Egyptian site Wadi al-Jarf, located on the Red Sea, that dates to the reign of King Khufu (c. 2585-2555 BCE though dates vary). A papyrus logbook found at the site details some of what transpired at this early dock. Limestone from the quarries at Tura was transported by boat through this harbor to eventually make its way to the pyramids at Giza. Though it is unclear what purpose this stone had, it was likely used as a layer of cladding on the outside of the pyramids. Other entries in the logbook record the transport of food and other items, the trajectories of vessels across the kingdom, and the titles of various officials working to keep goods and materials flowing.
