Civilopedia entry[]
In tropical forests, the sheer abundance of life allows a variety of strategies. Some plants grow quickly, fruit, and die. Others take their time – the hardwoods. Teak (from Southeast Asia), mahogany (from the Americas), and ebony (from Africa) are three examples of tropical hardwoods, and have been used since antiquity not only for their luster, but also because the fine-grained wood resists encroachment by fungi or insects, meaning that one can build a structure even in the most humid climate, and have it last. Palaces in the Southeast Asian highlands were often made of teak, and indigenous canoes in the Caribbean of mahogany. In the age of colonialism, though, these resources became sources of great desire and wealth – and fell under threat, with many protected now by law.
