Civilopedia entry[]

In Aksum, kingship was linked with religion, as kings were seen as the descendants of Astar, the principal god of the region. Before Aksum’s conversion to Christianity in the fourth century CE, royal tombs were marked by hawilt, large obelisks. These were decorated with false windows and doors, a type of vertical palatial skyscraper for the dead king. The obelisks were a source of ire for Aksum’s first Christian king, Ezana, who ended the practice, even though his own grave was marked with a hawilt. As a result, much of the original religious or social functions of these objects has been lost. Remaining hawilt number in the hundreds, including the Great Stele and King Ezana’s Stele.
