Civilopedia entry[]

Being moved by the waves allows one to feel the grip of a far greater power. For Hawaiians, the sea was the source of food, resources, trade, warfare, and, ultimately, the Hawaiian people themselves. The sea’s power was something that demanded magico-religious awe and veneration. Surfing, or he’e nalu (“wave sliding”), placed one in harmony with this power; it was a religious sport of nobility in the islands. Kings, blessed by the kahuna, displayed their grace and power through direct interaction with the sea, showing their mana in tandem with nature’s power.

Surfing remained a sport of kings and was a curiosity until it became popularized in the mid-20th century, especially with the figure of Duke Kahanamoku, a Hawaiian of noble birth who gained fame via an Olympic gold medal, and who used his platform to bring surfing and Hawaiian culture to a wider audience.
