Civilopedia entry[]
No single weapon separates a regular archer from a more deadly one; the best of the best are set apart through a combination of bow technology and training. Bows rely upon the resistance of a bent piece of material – usually wood – to propel an arrow through the air. Increasing that resistance increases the force of the arrow. Medieval archers maximized their effectiveness through the careful selection of wood (e.g. yew) and the construction of taller bows – ultimately producing the English longbow, a weapon that was cheap to make but required specific technique and could not be fired from horseback. Archers in Korea, India, and Arabia fused horns with another resistant material to the insides of their bows, which also increased the power of their shots; this delivered a smaller bow but it was more complicated to make and vulnerable to moisture. Longbows and composite bows existed as far back as 3000 BCE, but their use as formidable forces of war is more modern. These archers required special training – English soldiers described their technique of using the body’s weight to push forward and “bend” the bow, rather than using their arms to draw the string. Such bows could penetrate armor and were not rendered obsolete until the adoption of the cannon.
