Civilopedia entry[]
A heavy bomber's concept is simple: create a plane that can carry as much weight as possible, and make that weight bombs. Bombs dropped from aircraft do not need precision...as long as they destroy everything in sight. The first heavy bombers appeared during World War I, while air power was still in its infancy. Early bombers included the Soviet-built Sikorsky Ilya Muromets, which were biplanes with four engines. Years later, planes like the American B-17 Flying Fortress and the B-29 Superfortress participated in bombing runs at Dresden and Tokyo (Tokyo being the most destructive raid in history) and later dropped atomic bombs on Hiroshima and Nagasaki.
Before the age of the jet, bombers could compete with fighters. However, jet fighters, especially the Soviet MiG-15, were harder to outrun. On the other hand, by the time jet engines entered the fray, so had nuclear-tipped missiles. Bombers remained in use, but they were no longer the figurative tacnukes of war – not with real tacnukes in play.
