Civilopedia entry[]
In feudal systems, loyalty was tied to family – a single dynasty might control a section of land, be pledged to a particular king, and produce second sons or other branches of the family tree with their own ambitions. Certain nobles might gain particular honors or recognition, and incorporating these into coats-of-arms provided a family legacy. These coats-of-arms, or at least their colors, informed the dress of the people (e.g. soldiers) in a lord’s employ, as they invested authority onto a retainer or soldier, allowing others to recognize their political affiliation at a glance.
Commonly understood heraldic systems emerged during the Middle Ages in Europe, but other feudal systems existed elsewhere, such as the Japanese clan symbols (mon) or the Turkic tamga, a less elaborated but otherwise similar way to associate a family to an image.
