Civilopedia entry[]
The largest art museum in the world, the Hermitage – which sits on the banks of the Neva River in St. Petersburg – was originally known as “Catherine’s collection,” a testament to the art tastes of a monarchy focused on the cultivation and collection of art and culture. In 1762, Catherine the Great, tsarina of Russia, purchased a collection of art from a Berlin art dealer and installed the pieces in a building near the Winter Palace. The collection was not intended for her but was originally assembled for the Prussian king Friedrich II, who refused it. Over time, the collection grew and grew as Catherine purchased more pieces from collectors’ estates. Eventually, the buildings employed a staff of nearly a thousand people to manage the collection and arrange the extravagant festivities that marked Romanov life.
Under the tsars, the Hermitage was not the public museum it is today. This transformation happened after the Russian Revolution, a moment that ironically expanded the collection via the nationalization of many Russian nobles’ collections. It remains one of the most impressive art museums in the world.
Trivia[]
- The Hermitage’s wonder quote originates from the 1931 abstract essay Unpacking My Library by German philosopher Walter Benjamin.
