Civilopedia entry[]
The Songhai military calls to mind images of cavalry sweeping across the savannah. This is not entirely inaccurate, but the Songhai also retained a powerful navy based in the Niger River, on whose waters the empire depended. The hi-koi, the “master of the waters,” commanded this navy and maintained control over the river that was vital to maintaining power in the Songhai heartland. He also oversaw more peaceful traffic on the river, including the safe passage of merchant and civilian crafts.
