Civilopedia entry[]
Humans have thin skin. That is not a metaphor (though sometimes true) – rather, human flesh requires protection, and many creatures possess thicker hides, which we have long used to rely on for warmth, armor, or to soften the rough edges of metal and wooden tools. Our ancestors used hides for clothing long before recorded history, and leatherworking was developed by the Paleolithic, at the very least. This process involves breaking down animal skins to render them more durable and pliable and is key to making long-lasting hide-based materials. Leather mostly comes from cattle, though in pre-agricultural times a wider variety of animals might have been used. Aside from clothing, hides were used to produce parchment, rawhide, and coverings for basic houses.
