Civilopedia entry[]
Hillforts were Bronze and Iron Age fortifications found primarily in Europe. They used earthworks and ditches to reinforce a hill's natural defenses, sometimes enhancing dirt barriers with wooden stockades and other tactical barriers. They were often composed of multiple concentric walls, within which lay villages with populations far exceeding those of the smaller settlements that dotted the rural landscape.
Although initially developed by the Celtic peoples of Central Europe, the most famous hillforts are found in the British Isles and largely date to the Iron Age. The reason for their abundance is still debated – were they built in response to warfare or as permanent settlements to support growing trade networks? Either way, the scale of the earthworks makes them highly visible in the landscape – remnants of the ancient world living side by side with the modern.
