Civilopedia entry[]
Nelson Mandela recalled seeing the top of Hoerikwaggo (Table Mountain) from his prison in apartheid-era South Africa. He claimed the view lent him and his fellow prisoners hope. The mesa extends two miles from side to side, rising above Cape Town. It is formerly the land of the cattle-herding Khoe people and the hunters of the Khoekhoe people, later taken by Dutch settlers and then the British. The mesa was used as a fortification site and reservoir before being declared a national park in 1991, by Nelson Mandela himself.
It is currently a popular place for hiking and provides stunning views over Cape Town.
Trivia[]
- Hoerikwaggo's wonder quote comes Anne Peaches, a Western Apache woman from Cibecue, Arizona, interviewed in 1977 by American anthropologist Keith H. Basso.
