Civilopedia entry[]
The arms race between fortifications and artillery ended thanks to two major factors: airpower and heavy artillery. For its part, heavy artillery could throw explosive charges over fortifications, and it could do this over long distances. In fact, heavy artillery could dispense incredible destruction even when it was outside of the enemy's range of sight. This changed the nature of warfare, as mathematical calculations replaced a commander’s keen eye, and personal bravery mattered less than detailed trajectories. Howitzers were a key example of this trend; a howitzer charge, explosive and deadly, could be fired over most walls. The German “Big Bertha,” deployed during World War I, was notable as its shells could demolish the best star forts, and their explosions disrupted masonry protected by layers of earth. Even today, conventional artillery provides a constant threat in places like Seoul, where North Korean artillery could deal nearly as much damage as a nuclear attack.
