Civilopedia entry[]
The Persian Immortals became a legendary part of the Achaemenid army. However, there remains some confusion concerning the accuracy of the term "immortal." We know the name thanks to the Greek historian Herodotus, but his sources were limited, and he often preferred a good story to verified fact.
According to Herodotus, the Immortals were not undying warriors, but their unit was intended to be eternal. As soon as a member of the company became unable to fight, he was immediately replaced by another, so that a unit was always at full strength. Descriptions of their exact composition vary but include leather-clad javelin throwers and heavily-armored cavalry. Their arms likely varied over time, region, and battle. Whatever they might have called themselves, the Immortals formed an elite military that swept over South Asia, North Africa, the Middle East, and Europe.
