Influence is a new yield introduced in Civilization VII. It is needed for a civilization to conduct diplomacy with other civilizations.
Mechanics[]
Influence is a global yield used primarily for diplomacy and interactions with other leaders and Independent Powers. Unlike other yields, generating
Influence within a
Settlement does not contribute to its direct development. Instead, your empire accumulates
Influence as a resource to perform various diplomatic actions, including:
- Open Borders Agreements – Establishing mutual border access between civilizations.
- Trade Relationship Improvements – Enhancing trade benefits with other civilizations.
- Endeavors – Negotiating deals that increase yield generation for both parties.
- Sanctions – Imposing penalties on rival civilizations.
- Espionage – Conducting covert operations to gain advantages.
- Voicing War Support – Influencing wars by supporting a side, affecting [{Combat (Civ7)|combat]] effectiveness and
Happiness.
- Befriending and Influencing Independent Powers – Gaining favor and control over city-states and neutral factions.
Influence consolidates multiple mechanics from Civilization VI — such as
Diplomatic Favor,
Envoys, espionage, and
Trade Route limits — into a single streamlined currency. This makes diplomacy more intuitive while still allowing for strategic depth.
A high Influence income enables a civilization to manipulate other leaders more effectively and is essential for maximizing benefits from city-states. However, unlike
Science or
Culture,
Influence does not inherently lead to exponential snowballing. Investing heavily in
Influence is not always necessary, but maintaining a moderate, steady income is advisable.
The exception is for civilizations pursuing aggressive military strategies. In frequent wars, Influence becomes significantly more valuable, as voicing war support is crucial to maintaining stability. Without sufficient
Influence, war efforts will lead to a severe drop in
Happiness, slowing growth and potentially causing
Settlements to rebel or be lost.
