Influence is a new yield introduced in Civilization VII. It is needed for a civilization to conduct diplomacy with other civilizations.
Mechanics[]
Certain transactions in Civilization VII will use Influence as a resource. Some examples of ways Influence can be spent include:
- Requesting Open Borders from another civilization, rather than bartering for Gold.
- Performing an agreement that will give both players a set amount of a yield per turn (such as Culture), and the recipient can choose to accept your agreement, decline (refunding your Influence), or spend some of their own Influence to increase the amount of said yield that both of you will earn (e.g., a baseline deal could provide 2 Culture per turn for the initiating player and 1 Culture per turn for the receiving, whereas if the receiving player offered their own Influence to enhance the agreement, both players would earn 4 Culture per turn). This mechanic resembles Alliances from Civilization VI.
- Voicing your support for a specific civilization during a war, causing the side with less support to suffer from weakened combat effectiveness and Happiness.
- Offensive treaties, which can hamper enemy opposing civilizations in unspecified ways (which may have effects similar to Spy actions from previous entries).
Influence has a relatively low maximum storage, encouraging the player to spend it frequently as opposed to hoarding it.
