Civilopedia entry[]

Institutes emerged from medieval observatories and mathematical academies as a means to support scholars pursuing studies at their highest levels. From the start, institutes encouraged the study of specialized knowledge, providing funding and resources, such as libraries and research facilities, to their members. Originally, these establishments were founded by governments and monarchies to capitalize on the Scientific Revolution; some were attached to universities while others operated autonomously. But independent scholars, such as Tycho Brahe and Thomas Edison, also formed institutes, drawing great minds together to solve some of the world’s most complex scientific puzzles.
