Civilopedia entry[]
According to Finnish legend, the divine smith Ilmarinen brought iron out of the bogs and fens to make tools for humanity. He sought to infuse the metal with a bee’s honey to make it gentle and kind, but he accidentally put wasp’s poison into the metal instead and forged the iron we know today – iron that makes tools as well as weapons of war. At the very end of prehistory, ironworking spread in various ways throughout the Old World. In the Near East, some five millennia ago, people began to smelt iron for basic tools and weapons, a technology that expanded across Asia and Africa, and later Europe, where the Celts spread the technology. Iron was not always superior to bronze; bronze is sharper and more durable, but iron is more pliable and cheaper to produce. Roman soldiers often noted that the swords of their Germanic foes would blunt and bend after a few rounds of fighting. But iron, refined with high heat, contains some amount of steel, and steel is harder, sharper, and more durable than bronze. Steel made all the difference in warfare – at least until gunpowder.
