Civilopedia entry[]

The British Navy was the empire’s “wooden wall.” But what is more effective than a wooden wall? An iron one. Cladding naval warships in iron plates seemed ludicrous at first, but proved an effective defense against enemy fire. A classic matchup between ironclads was the 1862 battle between the Confederate Virginia (previously the Merrimack) and the Union Monitor at Hampton Roads, a body of water near Norfolk, Virginia. Both ships were anomalies – the triangular, turtle-like Confederate ship and the low-slung, almost submarine Monitor. Although the battle was indecisive, the duel showcased the ironclad’s power and durability, prompting the addition of Monitor-class ships to the United States fleet.

Ironclads flourished elsewhere in the late 1800s, including the Erzherzog Ferdinand Max of Austria, and the Re d’Italia of Italy, though neither shared the Monitor’s unusual profile (one that may have contributed to its sinking in poor weather). Ironclads suffered by being at the leading edge of technology; as soon as one was completed, a new metallurgical or engineering advance had already made it obsolete.
