How do you use Ironworks? |
Civilopedia entry[]
Outside of easier availability, iron offered few benefits greater than bronze. However, iron smelted at a higher temperature turned into steel, which was far harder and stronger than any bronze – that was iron’s key advantage. The means to produce such high temperatures involved forcing air into the furnace, either by exploiting natural conditions or by using an advanced form of bellows. Early iron production, especially in India (wootz or Damascus steel), produced iron with a high enough steel content to be desired for luxury tools and weapons that were durable, corrosion-resistant, and able to hold an edge.
However, this process didn't become standardized until the modern era. Iron and steelworks used blast furnaces powered by coke or charcoal to force air into the forge, producing pig iron (for casting), steel, and other forms of iron. Before the turn toward coke (which is less pure than charcoal), iron production decimated forests out of the sheer demand for fuel – the forests of England disappeared into blast furnaces during the Industrial Revolution. Modern ironworking remains an important industry in the USA, Russia, China, Japan, and India.
