Ivory refers to the hard, off-white enamel of teeth or tusks of large mammals, generally elephants, though people have harvested hippopotamus, whale, walrus and even mammoth. Ivory graced the eyes of Roman statues, the handles of Javanese daggers, and the masks of Beninese queens. While domesticated elephants existed in South and Southeast Asia, these materials largely came from hunting. The demand for ivory caused the disappearance of elephants across Africa and the Near East, and, in the present day, has nearly caused the wholesale disappearance of elephants en masse: accordingly, many nations ban the trade of ivory altogether.
