Civilopedia entry[]

The Jacobins were the most prominent political group during the French Revolution. Founded in 1789 as the Club Breton, the group originally organized to discuss issues relating to Brittany's Third Estate (the common people). These conversations quickly began to include neighboring provinces, and the club evolved into the Société des Amis de la Constitution (Society of the Friends of the Constitution), nicknamed the Jacobin Club.

After relocating to Paris, membership grew rapidly as France's political situation heated up. The club initially aimed to defend the rights of the French people, but inner divisions over loyalty to the king resulted in a member exodus. Maximilien Robespierre led those who remained to increasing radicalization, and they soon took a leading role in the French Revolution and the ensuing Reign of Terror. Although the Jacobin Club was officially closed in 1794 after the fall of Robespierre, its ideals survived in contemporary movements across Europe, and its role in the French Revolution marks a turning point in political philosophy in the Western world.
