Civilopedia entry[]
Jade was always the mark of kings. In China, jade ornaments and tools were carved for royals – or those who desired to live like royals. Jade combs, drinking vessels, pipe stems, and writing implements would all increase one’s health, prosperity, and prestige. This was especially true with the Six Ritual Jades: markers of prestige that have existed since before recorded history. Jade is widely considered green, but Chinese jade was originally pale – the later Burmese jade carries a greenish luster. Jade was mined from the Kachin highlands as a part of the complicated and often antagonistic relationship between lowland and highland people. It remains a source of both jade and conflict.
In Mesoamerica and among the Māori, jade had functions similar to that in Asia – a rare mineral associated with beauty, art, and magic.
