Civilopedia entry[]

The ballcourt – jalaw – was a vital part of Maya society as a space that linked athletics and religion. Players would strike a heavy rubber ball in an attempt to pass it through a stone hoop while the opposing team tried to overturn control of the ball. The relatively simple custom was amplified by a clear deterrent to losing: sometimes the losers were ritually sacrificed (how often is a matter of archaeological speculation). The game also figures in Maya myth: the Hero Twins make their names as ball-players, playing as far and wide as the underworld, and in so doing they arrange the death and defeat of its malevolent gods.

The ball game extended across Mesoamerica, from Maya lands to the later Aztec Empire, and as far north as the present-day state of Arizona. As with the Hero Twins story, the game may have been a substitute for larger violent conflicts, allowing a ritualized form of competition when direct conflict would have cost too much, in both lives and infrastructure.
